Dubai Golden Shaheen Preview, March 25, 2022

US stars clash in fast and furious Golden Shaheen

Some of the fastest horses in the world will clash in the USD$2 million Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen (sponsored by Atlantis Dubai), one of the most exciting races on the Dubai World Cup card.

The 1200-metre dirt contest has been won for the last four years by horses trained in the United States and they send out a formidable team once again.

Mark Glatt sends over his Grade 1 winner Dr. Schivel, a notable nose second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint in November, while Saffie Joseph Jnr is represented by Drain The Clock, winner of the G1 Woody Stephens at Belmont Park in June.

Glatt arrived in Dubai on Wednesday to oversee the final preparations for Dr. Schivel and issued an upbeat bulletin.

“He’s a real laidback horse, he takes everything in his stride,” he said. “I think he’ll be very close in the race as he’s pretty tactical. Depending on what they’re doing on the front end, with the nine hole, Flavien [Prat, jockey] will be able to choose what to do. He will be able to see the majority of the field in the early stages.

“He’s gone wire to wire and also gone from four, five lengths out of it. We trust Flavien; he’s ridden the horse magnificently each time.”

With Joseph opting to stay back in the States, assistant Sarah Shaffer has been training and riding Drain The Clock and reports that everything has gone well with the chestnut’s preparation.

“He had his final piece of work on Sunday and it couldn’t have gone any better,” she said. “Saffie is very particular about the kind of work he wants and we hit it perfectly and I’m so happy with how he feels going over the track.”

Wondrwherecraigis, a first Dubai runner for trainer Brittany Russell, has also shipped here from the States, while Strongconstitution has been based in Dubai for the past three months for California trainer Doug O’Neill.

Strongconstitution, last seen finishing fifth in the G3 Burj Nahaar over a mile, gained a late entry into the race only on Sunday, but O’Neill’s assistant Leandro Mora is grateful for the opportunity.

“We were so thankful for the last-minute invitation and we were able to get a great rider in Christophe Lemaire who we think will fit him really well,” he said.

“Cutting back in distance, we’re hoping the blinkers will help keep him up closer. He has sprinted before in California and ran a good second. He almost threw [rider] Tony [Romero] earlier this week, so he’s fresh and happy which is all we can ask for.”

The UAE last won the Golden Shaheen in 2016 when Muarrab was successful for trainer Musabbeh Al Mheiri. He is represented by G3 Al Shindagha Sprint winner Meraas, who is likely to settle up with the pace early from his draw in eight under jockey Antonio Fresu.

“Beautiful” was the first word extracted from Al Mheiri when asked about his star sprinter’s preparations. “Everything has gone well and we are happy with his draw. This has been a lucky race for us and, inshallah, he will run a big race.”

The home challenge is further bolstered by G3 Mahab Al Shimaal winner Eastern World, trained by Ahmad Bin Harmash, who won the course and distance contest on his first sprinting attempt.

“At the start of the season we didn’t think he’d be going for the six-furlong race, that’s for sure,” said jockey Ray Dawson. “But he’s always shown a lot of speed and Ahmad saw something in the horse, added blinkers and he won really well. I don’t think there was any element of fluke to it.”

The international field is completed by 2021 runner-up Red Le Zele, trained in Japan by Takayuki Yasuda, and his compatriot Chain Of Love while Doug Watson runs dual course and distance winner Al Tariq and Everfast, who cuts back in trip.

Manjeer, second to Eastern World last time out, lines up for French trainer Carina Fey, Good Effort represents UAE trainer Ismail Mohammed while Mobaadel flies the Bahrain flag for Fawzi Nass.

The Dubai Golden Shaheen is race six, scheduled for 6:45pm UAE time.

First Class is top class in Kahayla Classic

$1,000,000 Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic Sponsored by Ithra Dubai

Racing on Dubai World Cup day got underway in thrilling fashion with First Classs winning his match race against Kerless Del Roc in the PA Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic sponsored by Ithra Dubai over 2000m on the dirt at Meydan Racecourse.

Trained by Alban de Mieulle and ridden by Ronan Thomas, the five-year-old Dahess gelding might have felt he had broken away in the straight, but Kerless Del Roc, trained locally by Ahmed Al Mehairbi, was in no mood to give up and challenged until the end in hands of Pat Cosgrave, with the leading duo pulling well clear of the rest of the field.

In the straight they went head to head until virtually the final 100 metres when First Class appeared to pull away, only to be pegged back yet again as Kerless Del Roc dug deep to reduce the margin of defeat to a head. A further nine and a half lengths back in third was Hadi De Carrere for trainer Thomas Fourcy and rider Olivier Peslier.

Alban de Mieulle, trainer of the winner First Class, said: “I have been placed before in this race and the Sheema Classic so to get a win on one of the biggest nights in global racing is amazing. He’s a different horse and we’ve spent the last five or six months trying to make him better and he’s really come along nicely. This means so much and I am so pleased that Qatar has been able to win a race at the Dubai World Cup meeting.”

Winning jockey Ronan Thomas said: “We went very quickly and when we came round the bend I was very confident because last time at Sakhir I won quite easily. He came from America so he’s tough on the dirt and he’s just improving. I travelled very easily and when I asked him for a turn of foot he gave me everything to the post.

“I was very confident of getting there because he won so easily last time out in Saudi Arabia. I beat some good horses and I beat them without using the whip and very easy. Today was another sport though because we were on the dirt and against a tougher field but we won by a neck and it was a great result.”

Ahmed Al Mheirbi, trainer of runner-up Kerless De Roc, said: “It was close, but it was good. You know (finishing) second is a good result. We will come back next year and try to win it.”

Thomas Fourcy, trainer of third-placed Hadi De Carrere, said: “He ran well, but it’s difficult to come from so far back. He kept running on all the way to the finish so I’m still happy.”

Olivier Peslier, jockey, Hadi De Carrere, said: “Going past the winning post on the first circuit we got shuffled back and from that point it was difficult to make up the ground. He ran on well up the straight.”

4th – Brraq, jockey Pat Dobbs said: “He never really travelled for me but still kept on to get fourth. I’d say he needs blinkers.”

6th – Dergham Athbah, jockey Jim Crowley said: “I was caught a bit wide on him, he ran well enough considering.”

7th – Deryan, jockey Ioritz Mendizabal said: “He was in third going well, then came under pressure before the home turn and we lost ground.”

13th – RB Rich Lyke Me, jockey Adrie De Vries said: “After the start he shied away from the horse outside him and I thought we were going to go through the fence. We were knocked out of the race, we ended up so far back. It was very out of character for him.”

14th – Ashton Tourettes, jockey Christophe Lemaire said: “I had a good spot early in the race but he didn’t quicken.”

16th Jarif, jockey Cristian Demuro said: “He did not handle the dirt there.”
